Why your business needs professional product photography

Date: 3rd February 2017 Posted by matt

Here at the Gold Coast photography studio, as well as all the glamourous modelling photoshoots, we do a lot of product photography. In this day and age, visual impact is king - no matter how great your business is or how fast and flashy your sparkling new website is, you're not going to get anywhere without great photography. Whether it's for a huge advert on the side of a building or just a quick update on your website's blog, your images need to be perfect.

Product photography is one of the most misunderstood types of photography. I mean, how hard can it be to shoot a bottle of shampoo? It's not like it's going to blink at the wrong moment! However, product photography is one of the most technically difficult types of photography out there – it has to be absolutely pixel perfect. These days, we're all used to seeing advertising everywhere and you may not even realise, but the product images are perfect... every time. The moment there is a flaw in your product photography, or if one image doesn't match the next one, it just screams "amateur!"

Not only must your product photography be in perfect focus, perfectly lit, and perfectly positioned, it needs to maintain its style and technical details such as the colour and the tone right throughout every single one of your images. This is usually quite simple if you have just a couple of images and shoot them at the same time, but imagine if you have dozens of products to be photographed and you shoot them on two different days, sometimes months apart. It's of critical importance to be able to maintain consistency in style, and only a very small change in, for example, shooting angle will destroy that.

The best proof of why you need professional product photographs for your business is in our customers - at least half of our product photography clients start with "We tried to do this ourselves, but it just didn't look very good". Well, no, it won't. Even if you have a great camera and consider yourself a passable photographer, product photography is a whole different ballgame that requires a huge amount of equipment, various lighting rigs, post-production editing and an efficient and consistent workflow, and - above all - experience.

So here are my top reasons why you need professional product photography for your website and advertising:

Visual impact is the most important thing in advertising.
Your product photos need to be perfect, not just 'good'.
Your business will suffer if your competitors' product photography is better than yours.
Consistency is key - your image style needs to be identical between shots for a good-looking website. To have a clear "brand", this is super important!
A product photographer will know what looks good on a website, a billboard, or even a t-shirt.
Product photography composition can be the difference between a great advertising photograph and a so-so shot. Unless you have a very experienced eye for composition in advertising, you will get this wrong.
Product photographs do not come straight out of the camera. Every photograph that you see published for advertising has been through some level of post-production editing ("Photoshopping") to give it a bit more zing, and an experienced product photographer will know what's right for your product and business.

So, the bottom-line is that your business' turnover and profit depend on getting professional product photography! Give us a call now and we can discuss what GCPhoto can do for your business.

Cheers,
matt g
