Types of Photoshoot

There are many different types of photoshoot, and we can do most of them - all of them, in fact - at GCPhoto The Gold Coast Photography Studio in Tugun. If you scroll through the photo gallery above, you'll see some examples of different types of photoshoot and below there's a description of different types of photoshoot and suggestions as to the most appropriate for your studio photography session.

Headshots

As the name suggests, 'headshots' are just that - shots of the head. The simplest type of portrait, this type of photograph is suitable for, for example, your social media profile, job and casting applications, and your website. Headshots are lit and shot in a particular way to make you look approachable but professional, and it's very important to get them just right! As well as the headshot, there is also the 'full-length headshot' or 'bodyshot', which is like the headshot but shows you from head to toe. You'll need one of these for your acting or modelling portfolio so that the director or photographer can see your body-shape etc.

Portrait photography

A portrait is supposed to show off who you are, and it's my job as the photographer to bring out the image that shows you off best. For a portrait photograph, it's important that the photographer captures you as you are, rather than posing you in awkward smiles or uncomfortable positions. The photographer may use the lighting or positioning to emphasise or hide certain characteristics, but the end result should still definitely be you both in terms of looks and personality. A portrait photography photoshoot is ideal for personal shots and to capture those special times in your life.

Portfolio photography

A modelling portfolio photography package includes the headshots and full-length body shots in the right format that you'll need for your portfolio, plus a number of photographs in different outfits that show off what a great model you are. For some models, you may want a broad range of styles and outfits, while other models may need one specific style if they are modelling for a particular type of photography. The type(s) of photography will be discussed before the photoshoot to make sure you get exactly what you need.

Modelling photography

"Modelling photography" is a bit of a catch-all term, but the difference with, for example, portrait photography, is that the photographer is capturing a particular look and style. The particular style might be at the request of the client or might be the idea of the photographer.

Lifestyle photography

"Lifestyle photography" is essentially a stylised type of portrait photography. If you are into a particular look, hobby, music, sport or whatever, we'll integrate that into the photoshoot to best show you doing what you do best.

Glamour photography

Glamour photography is a particular type of modelling or portrait photoshoot in which the lighting and posing is set up to produce an attractive and sexy image. A glamour photoshoot may involve lingerie or partial nudity, but it doesn't have to, and it doesn't need to be explicit or expose too much.

Boudoir photography

Boudoir photography is similar to glamour photography except that the style involves a bit more shadow and shade, and often has a somewhat old-fashioned appearance. The major difference between glamour and boudoir photography is that while glamour photography is for modelling purposes, boudoir photography is somewhat more discreet and is intended for the subject's enjoyment rather than the public's.

High- and low-key photography

High- and low-key are two different styles that can be used with many of the types of photoshoot described above. In high-key photography, there is a lot of light and appears almost (but not quite) over-exposed such that it gives a milky smooth finish to the skin tones, while low-key is much darker and there is more shadow, which gives an interesting and dramatic shot. For example, you might use a high-key shot for a glamour photoshoot but use a low-key photoshoot for a gothic boudoir shoot.
